Review of the SHJT International Conference of 17 to 19 December 2019

Published on January 14, 2020

The conference organised by the SHJT, devoted to the relationship of the Jews of the Maghreb Protectorates with France from the end of the 18th century to the present day, was held from Tuesday 17 to Thursday 19 December 2019 in the auditorium of the MAHJ, with a large number of participants despite access being made difficult by the transport strikes.

The conference was marked by papers of a high scientific standard presented by researchers and historians from various parts of the world (France, Israel, the Maghreb, Canada, the United States), who honoured us with their presence, and by fascinating debates. The contributions of the young researchers and the concluding synthesis by Claire Marynower drew particular attention. The conference highlighted new research methods and new questions which may complement, nuance or even contradict our earlier work. Fruitful exchanges took place between researchers regardless of nationality or religion, and new joint projects were considered.

The conference closed with a convivial dinner bringing together the speakers in the private salons of the Governor of Les Invalides, in the presence of the Deputy Director for North Africa at the Quai d’Orsay and the Director General of the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations.

The SHJT and its President warmly thank the public and private institutions and the sponsors who supported this conference and without whom it could not have taken place.

For those who were unable to attend the conference, owing in particular to the transport strike, the proceedings of the conference will be published by the SHJT.
