Conferences 2019-2020

Introduction: Conferences

Since its foundation in 1997, the Society for the History of the Jews of Tunisia has organised, at more or less regular intervals, scholarly meetings between European, Maghrebi and Israeli researchers, enabling them to meet, to exchange work and knowledge, and to study together a theme defined according to the state and needs of research.

The first three conferences focused on the history of the Jews of Tunisia, although some additional papers ventured into neighbouring territories (Algeria, Morocco and Libya) and room was also made for other disciplines (social sciences, literature).

  • March 1999: Jewish-Muslim relations in Tunisia from the Middle Ages to the present day: cross perspectives
  • April 2003: Between East and West, Jews and Muslims in Tunisia: histories and historiographies revisited (18th and 19th centuries)
  • April 2005: The Alliance Israélite Universelle in Tunisia (1860-1967) and the socio-cultural transformations of the Jewish community.
  • November 2008: The Jews of the Maghreb from the colonial era to the present day: history, memory and writings of the past.
  • December 2019: The Jews of the Maghreb protectorates and France from the end of the 17th century to the present day
  • April 2023: The Jews and the law in Tunisia - from the protectorate to independence (1881-1956) - Between historical progress and religious resilience

The conferences listed above gave rise to exchanges between researchers and also to a boom in research on North African Judaism, which until relatively recently was regarded as the poor relation of Jewish studies. They brought together Israeli, Maghrebi, North American and French researchers recognised in the field of Jewish studies and of research on the history of the Jews of North Africa or related disciplines.

It was a fine achievement to bring together at the Sorbonne, from 22 to 25 March 1999, so many researchers, Jewish or non-Jewish, from Tunisia or elsewhere, Muslim Tunisians and Israelis, and to draw a collective work from a sum of individual contributions.1 The fusion of all these papers managed to avoid cacophony but also, through...Continue reading
