Paul Sebag Prize

Paul Sebag Prize 2025

The Paul Sebag Prize, created by the Society for the History of the Jews of Tunisia (SHJT) to honour the memory of an eminent master who played a fundamental role in the study and knowledge of the history of the Jews of Tunisia, and to encourage research on this history, was awarded for the 2024-2025 academic year to Mr David Ichoua Moatty of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for his research on:

The language of the “Tahallil Songs” – Festive poems in the life-cycle ceremonies of the Jews of Tunisia.

The jury praised the innovative character of this research on Judeo-Arabic poems sung during the various life-cycle celebrations of the Jews of Tunisia. The author, who has catalogued forgotten and extant texts in libraries in Israel, France and Tunisia, identifies the borrowings from Arab culture found in these poems, as well as the French and Italian influences that appeared as Westernisation progressed.

The prize was presented to the laureate in Paris on Sunday 23 March 2025 at the close of the study day organised by the SHJT at the Mémorial de la Shoah.
