Lecture by Claude Nataf on 27 January 2026: The Dreyfus Affair as Seen from Tunisia
Claude Nataf
As part of its lecture series, the SHJT is pleased to welcome Claude Nataf, President of the SHJT.
The lecture will take place on Tuesday 27 January 2026 at 6:30 pm at the Mairie du 9e arrondissement (9th arrondissement town hall), 6 rue Drouot. Claude Nataf will speak on the following theme:
The Opening of the First Alliance Israélite Universelle School in Tunisia (1878) and the Educational Revolution of Tunisian Jewry
While the Dreyfus Affair gave rise to violent antisemitic demonstrations in Algeria, with several deaths in the Jewish community and the election as Mayor of Algiers of a self-proclaimed anti-Jewish candidate, the situation was quite different in Tunisia, where Chief Rabbi Elie Borgel obtained the banning of an antisemitic newspaper. The speaker will examine the reasons for the different situations in Algeria and Tunisia and will trace the impact of the Affair and its influence on the Jewish community of Tunisia and its feelings towards France.
