9 December ceremonies

Introduction: 9 December Ceremony

Every year since 9 December 1997, the year of its founding, our Society has organised a ceremony commemorating the round-up of the Jews of Tunis by the SS (9 December 1942), in memory of the Jews of Tunisia deported to the extermination camps of Europe and of the victims of Nazi barbarity who died in the labour camps set up by the Nazis on Tunisian soil.

It takes place at the Mémorial de la Shoah in Paris, in the presence of representatives of the government of the Republic, diplomatic representatives of Tunisia and Israel in France, and various religious, civil and military dignitaries.

This ceremony serves two distinct purposes:

  • an educational purpose : to make known a little-known episode of the Holocaust that sheds light on the Nazis’ design and its global character, not merely confined to Europe.
  • a purpose of remembrance : to ensure that the memory of the victims of the Nazis on Tunisian soil endures beyond the dispersal of that country’s Jewish community after decolonisation.
